About our Sponsors and Stakeholders

Town of Kwinana.

The 2006 Commendation of the Spectacles Yargan Cultural Tours in the National Awards for Local Government has proven the Tours to be a showcase in how local government can successfully work with industry and the local indigenous community to promote and foster Indigenous culture and community harmony.
The venture is a collaboration between the Town of Kwinana, Medina Aboriginal Cultural Community (MACC), the Department of Environment & Conservation (DEC) and Alcoa Australia. This partnering of Council, Alcoa, DEC and MACC provides a perfect balance between local government, business, community, environmental protection and cultural awareness and enhancement.
The project provides a model example for ways of exploring avenues to promote and educate community members on traditional cultures and indigenous people. The success of the tours highlights the growing interest from the public to experience and understand more about Aboriginal history and people.
The Spectacles Cultural Tours provide an infrastructure for local Indigenous people to share knowledge, language and history while preserving and promoting a vibrant traditional and contemporary Indigenous culture.
The Town of Kwinana is committed to fostering community harmony and inclusion and implementing processes or projects that create avenues for the cross cultural integration and personal development of the Indigenous community and the community at large.

The Department of Environment and Conservation was formed on 1 July 2006 from the amalgamation of the Department of Environment and the Department of Conservation and Land Management. DEC supports The Spectacles Yargan Tours which enables people to experience Aboriginal heritage, with Aboriginal people, in the natural environment.
The Spectacles wetland is in Beeliar Regional Park. Comprising two chains of wetlands, Beeliar Regional Park runs parallel to the coast through Melville, Cockburn and Kwinana. Beeliar Regional Park's 19 lakes and numerous shallower wetlands are home to abundant wildlife and are great places to visit. Read more about The Department of Environment and Conservation
